What is DMT (Dimethyltryptamine)?

DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) is a powerful hallucinogenic compound found naturally in many plants and animals, including the human brain. It has been used for centuries in South American shamanic practices as part of ayahuasca brew. In its pure synthetic form, DMT is typically smoked or vaporized. When smoked, DMT produces one of the most intense psychedelic experiences known, with effects beginning within seconds and lasting only 15-30 minutes - hence the nickname "businessman's trip." Users report complete detachment from reality, encounters with seemingly sentient entities, geometric patterns, and experiences that feel more real than ordinary consciousness. The drug acts primarily on serotonin receptors, particularly 5-HT2A. Many users describe DMT experiences as spiritual or mystical, reporting life-changing insights. However, the intensity can also be terrifying, and the long-term psychological impacts remain poorly understood.

Effects

DMT produces immediate and overwhelming visual hallucinations including intricate geometric patterns, fractals, vivid colors, and complex visual landscapes. Users report encounters with entities or beings, complete ego dissolution, profound sense of interconnectedness, timelessness, and experiences that feel more real than everyday life. The intensity is described as blasting through layers of reality into alternate dimensions or universes. Many report a sense of sacredness, cosmic significance, or encountering the fundamental nature of consciousness itself. Physical effects include increased heart rate and blood pressure, dilated pupils, dizziness, and sometimes nausea. Users typically lie down or sit during the experience due to complete dissociation from physical reality.

Risks & Dangers

The primary danger is psychological trauma from overwhelming experiences. The intense, reality-shattering nature can trigger panic, terror, or lasting anxiety and PTSD, particularly in unprepared users or challenging settings. Some experience persistent perceptual changes, anxiety, or derealization after use. DMT can trigger underlying mental illness, particularly in individuals predisposed to schizophrenia or psychotic disorders. The profound experiences can lead to delusional thinking or difficulty integrating the experience into everyday life. Physical risks include dangerous increases in heart rate and blood pressure, particularly risky for those with cardiovascular conditions. The complete dissociation creates vulnerability to accidents, falls, or dangerous situations if not in a safe, supervised environment. DMT should never be combined with MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) or SSRIs due to risk of serotonin syndrome.

Withdrawal Symptoms

No physical withdrawal symptoms. Some users report missing the profound experiences or difficulty readjusting to normal consciousness. Psychological effects may include temporary depression, anxiety, or sense that everyday reality feels less meaningful.

Addiction Potential

Low. DMT does not cause physical dependence or withdrawal. Psychological addiction is rare due to the intensity and demanding nature of the experience. Most users do not seek frequent use. However, some individuals become psychologically fixated on the experiences.

Duration

Smoking/Vaporizing: Effects begin in 10-30 seconds, peak at 2-5 minutes, return to baseline within 15-30 minutes. Residual psychological effects may last hours. Oral DMT (with MAOI, as in ayahuasca) lasts 4-6 hours.

Legal Status

Schedule I controlled substance in the United States. No accepted medical use. Possession, manufacture, and distribution are federal crimes. Ayahuasca containing DMT exists in a legal grey area for religious use in some jurisdictions.

Dosage Information

Smoked/vaporized: Low dose 10-20mg (threshold effects), moderate 20-40mg (full breakthrough possible), high dose 40-60mg+ (guaranteed breakthrough with extreme intensity). Oral (with MAOI): 50-150mg. Doses vary with smoking technique efficiency. Even 30mg can produce overwhelming effects.

Alcohol Interaction Warning

Mixing DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) with alcohol can be extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening. Combining substances increases the risk of:

  • • Respiratory depression and overdose
  • • Unpredictable effects and loss of consciousness
  • • Increased toxicity to liver and other organs
  • • Impaired judgment leading to risky behaviors
